There are total 310 Salt Mills registered with the BSCIC for salt production. Out of which, 129 (42%) are currently functional. BSCIC revoked licence of remaining salt mills either due to irregular production of salt or due to non-compliance with existing standards of producing adequately iodised salt for edible purpose.
It is vitally important to ensure the cultivation of quality salt to achieve 100 percent use and production of quality iodized salt. It is our earnest goal to build up an “iodized Bangladesh”, which is why in Cox’s Bazar (51,802.30 acres) and in Chattogram (7,761.60 acres), there is a 59,563.90* acre area that has been utilized for a salt cultivation project.
The USI BD app has been developed to input all data quickly and easily to the central MIS through Smart Phone by the registered miller and their respective user. The inputted data will be synchronized into the central web-based MIS application through the USI BD app.
USI BD Central MIS has been integrated with ISMOS ERP to get the real-time basis data from the ERP to MIS through API. ISMOS ERP developed to provide user-friendly operation to traditional salt miller as well as data sharing with MIS conveniently.

Universal Salt Iodization (USI), which intends that all salt for human and animal consumption be iodized thus ensuring adequate iodine nutrition, was identified as the global strategy for the elimination of iodine deficiency.
Iodine deficiency disorders arise when the body does not get a sufficient amount of iodine for the thyroid to properly function. For example, iodine deficiency can cause goiter, an enlargement of the thyroid gland that can result from an underproduction of thyroid hormones (i.e. hypothyroidism)
Salt iodization, or the fortification of salt with iodine by salt manufacturers, is a major approach in the prevention of iodine deficiency.
WHO recommendations: All food-grade salt, used in household and food processing should be fortified with iodine as a safe and effective strategy for the prevention and control of iodine deficiency disorders in populations living in stable and emergency settings
Most people need an additional source of iodine as it is found in relatively small amounts in the diet. Iodization is the process of fortifying salt for human consumption with iodine and is an effective strategy to increase iodine intake at the population level
A management information system (MIS) is an information system used for decision-making, and for the coordination, control, analysis, and visualization of information in an organization. In addition, a MIS is the study of people, technology, organizations, and the relationships among them.
The USI BD Central MIS helps the salt miller management in short and long term planning, target setting and controlling the business functions. The MIS plays the role of information generation, communication, problem identification and helps in the process of decision-making.
MIS helps to collect combined Miller data and sending to Surveillance agencies to take decisions for improving the USI program in Bangladesh.
A miller get at a glance date wise report and information of his/her mill regarding purchasing, production, QC/QA, selling, monitoring and license issues which help to take a quick decisions to making quarterly, half-yearly and yearly planning, otherwise his/her business will be taken away by his/her competitors. This has further enhanced the necessity for such a system. Secondly, in this information age wherein information is doubling up every two or three years, a Miller has to process a large huge data; failing which he/she may end up taking a strong decision that may prove to be very costly to the company.
Yes, Miller data is completely secured in the MIS. Every miller has own privacy to preserve their data. Don’t look or get permission to access the each other’s information.
By high quality salt we mean salt that is high in sodium chloride and low in magnesium.
Since the addition of iodine has to be done with salt or sodium chloride, so that high quality salt with high sodium chloride is best.
The cost of conventional salt is 1,68,500.00 BDT* per acre, while the cost of producing high quality salt is 82,000.00 BDT*. In addition, conventional salt contains a maximum of 75% sodium chloride, while high quality salt contains a minimum of 95% sodium chloride.
